Perspective Based Synthetic Invisibility
Vanishing car revealed – Make
“I was experimenting with the whole concept of illusion but needed something a bit more physical to make a real impact…People have been stopping in the street to look and coming up and almost bumping into it, so it’s had the desired effect.”
. . .
Sara is a student of Drawing and Image Making at the University of Central Lancashire, where the university Office of Buzz Creation featured her work.
Sara Wilson has created an excellent example of synthetic invisibility, which was recently explained in a previous story at The Starnes. This static cloak is most effective if the viewer is observing the subject car from a precise point, but the illusion, like camouflage, remains somewhat effective from other perspectives. Sara states that people were “almost bumping into it” – when they were likely not at the ideal vantage point.
The next step for a multi-perspective synthetic invisibility cloak is to cover the car with flat, flexible screens which would display live background imagery from cameras placed at different points on the car’s body. The trick for a convincing cloak is to display the proper, matching background for each observer.
